South Korea and Mexico implemented a joint action plan to enhance bilateral cooperation in crude oil, essential natural resources, defense, and artificial intelligence, stated South Korean President Lee Jae Myung regarding his summit with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The president of South Korea revealed the signing of the Korea-Mexico Joint Action Plan 2026-2030 during a joint press conference with his Mexican colleague.

The action plan urges South Korea and Mexico to enhance their bilateral collaboration in advanced sectors such as AI, digital technology, aerospace, and defense, as stated by Lee.
South Korea and Mexico will strive to ensure that the agreement becomes effective quickly by finalizing essential processes, such as the official signing and legislative approval.
At the summit, the two nations finalized discussions on a renewed Bilateral Investment Treaty to establish the institutional foundation for enhancing bilateral trade and investment.
Furthermore, the two consented to establish a communication channel to discuss collaboration in supply chains, particularly regarding crude oil and essential natural resources, Lee states.
The president of South Korea mentioned that he and Sheinbaum also concurred on investigating methods for Seoul to assist Mexico’s current efforts to modernize its military, while enhancing exchanges in military training and research and development.
"I trust that President Sheinbaum will provide particular attention and support to facilitate the production of military equipment in Mexico through the application of Korea's advanced defense technologies, thereby helping strengthen Mexico's defense industry capabilities and enabling our two countries to jointly enter third-country markets," Lee says.
Taking advantage of the increasing enthusiasm of Mexican citizens for Korean culture, both nations will initiate a working group this year to investigate methods for fostering collaborative content creation and developing talent, while also enhancing collaboration in the wider cultural and educational areas, as stated by Lee.

Moreover, the two leaders consented to collaborate more closely in tackling significant challenges confronting the global community, with Sheinbaum reaffirming her unwavering support for Seoul’s policy of peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, the South Korean president remarked, describing Mexico as "a reliable friend with common values."
Sheinbaum emphasized a pact established with Lee to enhance collaboration in the cultural domain, which includes building a center for Korean culture in Mexico and promoting Mexican culture in South Korea. She expressed specific hopes for a visit to Mexico by K-pop supergroup BTS in 2027. She emphasized that both nations advocate for multilateralism and hold a common position on resolving conflicts peacefully.
Prior to the joint statement, the two leaders participated in a ceremony for signing memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and additional documents aimed at enhancing bilateral collaboration. During the summit, South Korea and Mexico finalized 17 MOUs and documents, covering areas like economic collaboration, defense, aerospace, and artificial intelligence.

Through a MOU concerning defense collaboration, both nations will share information and insights in the defense arena and pursue joint military exercises as well as defense research and development initiatives. A separate agreement regarding economic and industrial collaboration mandates the establishment of a director-level joint committee and the exchange of information on mineral resources.
Lee came here for a three-day state visit, marking the first time in 16 years that a South Korean president has visited Mexico on such an occasion. Prior to the summit, Lee honored Mexico's fallen heroes by placing flowers and observing a moment of silence at the Altar a la Patria in Chapultepec Park, a significant national monument that commemorates the country’s defenders and military heroes.
