MAG Appoints New President and Group Chief Executive Officer

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has officially declared that Datuk Izham Ismail will step down from his role as the group's chief executive, with his retirement taking effect on January 31, 2026, concluding a professional journey that has exceeded 40 years with the organization.

In accordance with the organization's pre-established leadership transition strategy, MAG announced the promotion of Nasaruddin A. Bakar to the role of president and group chief executive officer, a newly created position that replaces the previous group managing director's role.

Izham began his professional journey at Malaysia Airlines as a commercial aircraft pilot in 1979, and subsequently advanced through organizational hierarchies, assuming multiple significant leadership positions. He was selected as the group's top executive on December 1, 2017, thereby establishing himself as the most tenured chief executive in the company's history.

Throughout his leadership period, Izham managed critical financial reorganization and strategic operational enhancement initiatives that successfully guided MAG back to a profitable financial position in the recent past.

MAG announced that its enhanced financial standing now enables the company to pursue its next strategic stage of development, focusing on optimizing performance and establishing more environmentally and economically sustainable business practices under recently appointed leadership.

Nasaruddin, a locally developed executive who brings over thirty years of comprehensive expertise in aviation operations, corporate leadership, and strategic planning at MAG, has occupied numerous senior management roles throughout the organization, with his most recent position being the chief operating officer of Malaysia Airlines.

He contributes profound expertise and comprehensive insight into MAG's organizational framework, operational ethos, and long-term strategic objectives, having successfully directed numerous transformational projects, which include the notable revitalization of MASwings in 2022 and the strategic rollout of profit-focused organizational structures as outlined in the Long-Term Business Plan 2.0 (LTBP2.0), according to MAG.

In his role as president and group chief executive officer, Nasaruddin will be responsible for guiding MAG's strategic objectives.

 

He will be focusing on improving operational performance, enhancing customer satisfaction, and ensuring sustainable development across the company's airline and non-airline business segments - as the organization moves forward with its Long-Term Business Plan 3.0 and aims to solidify its status as a prominent player in the aviation industry.

The appointment of Nasaruddin represents a significant advancement in MAG's continuous development, guaranteeing consistent leadership and strategic implementation throughout the organization's diverse business operations.

Nasaruddin will receive comprehensive support from a highly competent leadership team that spans the entire organization, including three distinct profit-generating divisions: the airline operations, customer loyalty and travel-related services, and aviation support services.
