Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has successfully recruited three leading AI researchers—Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, from OpenAI’s Zurich lab to join Meta’s newly launched ‘superintelligence’ initiative.

All three scientists are said to have previously collaborated at Google DeepMind before co-founding OpenAI’s European presence, making their joint move to Meta particularly significant. This high-profile hiring is believed to be a part of Zuckerberg’s aggressive push to revitalize Meta’s AI division, especially following underwhelming performance from its most recent model.

According to reports, “Meta has offered signing bonuses as high as $100 million to attract elite talent. Additionally, Meta recently invested heavily in Scale AI and brought in its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to lead a new AI-focused division, signaling a major strategic shift. The tech giants like Meta, Google, and OpenAI are now engaged in an intense AI talent war. However, Meta’s recruitment of Beyer, Kolesnikov, and Zhai represents an early and impactful win for Zuckerberg’s campaign.

This talent acquisition emphasizes Meta’s intent to fill the gap with AI leaders like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Backed by billions in infrastructure investments and supported by extraordinary compensation offers, Meta is clearly positioning itself as a serious competitor in the future of artificial intelligence.
