Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang visited Taipei to meet with chip foundry partner TSMC, as the world's top company manages increasing tensions between Washington and Beijing regarding access to its leading AI chips.

"My primary reason for being here is to see TSMC," he informs, noting that he would remain just a few hours and depart following dinner with TSMC executives, as per a live feed shown by local media at Taipei's Songshan airport, where he arrived via private jet.

US President Donald Trump earlier this month hinted at the potential for additional advanced Nvidia chips beyond the H20 to be sold in China.

Nvidia was developing a new chip provisionally called the B30A, derived from its latest Blackwell architecture, which will surpass the H20 model in performance.

When inquired about the B30A, Huang mentioned that Nvidia was discussing with the U.S. about providing China with a successor to its H20 chip, though it wasn't a decision for the company to make.

"It's ultimately the decision of the U.S. government, and we are in discussions with them, but it's too early to determine," he stated.

Nvidia was approved in July to resume sales of the H20. It was created specifically for China after export limitations were imposed in 2023, but the company was suddenly instructed to halt sales in April.

Soon after receiving approval from Washington, Nvidia ordered 300,000 H20 chips from TSMC to bolster its current stock in response to high demand from Chinese firms, according to reports. However, days later, Nvidia faced accusations from China’s cyberspace regulator and state media claiming that the U.S. company's chips might present security threats.

Chinese officials subsequently warned Chinese tech companies against acquiring the H20, expressing worries over possible information security threats. Nvidia claims that its chips are free from backdoor vulnerabilities.

According to reports, citing two individuals informed about the situation, Nvidia has requested Foxconn to halt activities concerning the H20 chip. A third source indicated that Nvidia aimed to initially deplete its existing H20 stock.
