Optimistic of Stronger Food Sector Performance in 2026: Zulkifli Hasan

Zulkifli Hasan, the Coordinating Minister for Food, conveyed confidence that the performance of Indonesia's food sector will improve in 2026 as the nation attains food self-sufficiency in 2025.
"This year, we have already attained self-sufficiency. Next year, I think conditions will improve even more," Zulkifli stated in Jakarta.
The food industry is a key priority for the Indonesian government to uphold national stability while enhancing public well-being.
Zulkifli also mentioned that another key initiative under the direction of the Coordinating Ministry of Food is the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program. He is hopeful that the initiative will achieve its goal of 82.9 million recipients by March of the following year.

Furthermore, the government promotes the enhancement of village economies by fostering the establishment of Red and White Village Cooperatives.
Hasan mentioned that the government plans to create as many as 50,000 village cooperatives by 2026.
The minister has highlighted that the food self-sufficiency initiative would greatly enhance the local economy, pointing out that the initiative can elevate the welfare of the community, particularly for farmers and fishers.

Zulkifli clarified that food self-sufficiency encompasses a broad range, including staple items like rice and corn, along with protein sources such as fish and livestock goods.
Zulkifli evaluated that if the program is carried out effectively, it will elevate disadvantaged communities to an improved standard of living.
The Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, previously announced that Indonesia plans to announce food self-sufficiency in rice and corn by December 31, 2025, consistent with the national goal.

At the same time, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono declared that Indonesia aims to attain self-sufficiency in sugar, eggs, and chicken meat by 2026 following the achievement of self-sufficiency in rice and corn in 2025.
