Samsung SDI is shifting the collaborative battery factory it has been developing with US automaker General Motors, GM to an independent operation model.

This is seen as an outcome of lower battery demand relative to earlier projections, as GM has modified its electric vehicle (EV) rollout strategies in response to the EV divide and momentary demand slowdown.

Samsung SDI aims to establish the factory as its initial independent manufacturing facility in North America and set up several production lines for Energy Storage Systems, ESS, to focus on the North American ESS market.

Samsung SDI has announced its intention to purchase GM's entire 49.99 percent share in the joint venture Synergy Cells, located in New Carlisle, Indiana, US.

The exact terms, including the purchase price, remain under negotiation between the two companies and have yet to be concluded.

Synergy Cells is a subsidiary focused on EV battery manufacturing, boasting an annual capacity of 27GWh, created in 2024 through a joint investment of $3.5 billion from Samsung SDI and GM. The factory is in the process of being built.

After the stake purchase is finalized, the joint venture arrangement with GM will be terminated, and Samsung SDI will completely own and manage the factory.

Samsung SDI has established its first independent battery manufacturing facility in North America. The company intends to manufacture not just EV batteries for GM but also batteries for ESS at this facility.

The strategy is to shift the manufacturing capacity resulting from the decrease in EV demand to the swiftly expanding North American ESS market to enhance factory utilization. Since the previous year, Samsung SDI has been broadening its domestic sales channels by repeatedly entering into major supply agreements for ESS batteries with American energy firms.

Samsung SDI and GM will extend their partnership in battery development. The two firms entered into a Joint Development Agreement, JDA, on the same day to collaboratively develop next-gen prismatic batteries for electric vehicles, utilizing high energy density and rapid-charging technologies.

The collaboratively created products are anticipated to be installed in GM's upcoming generation of EVs in the future.
