VinSpace, the aerospace division of the Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, has finalized an agreement with SpaceX to send its inaugural satellites into orbit, representing an important advancement in Vietnam's desire to establish a local space sector.

VinSpace announced that its satellites will launch on a SpaceX Transporter rideshare mission in 2027.

The shared-launch model enables several clients to share the expense of one Falcon 9 rocket, a typical strategy for smaller satellite companies looking for economical access to orbit.

"The project supports its strategy aimed at building capabilities across the space value chain, including satellite design and manufacturing, assembly, integration and testing, launch management, operations, and data services," VinSpace says.

VinSpace will oversee the entire lifecycle of its satellites, spanning from research and development to production and on-orbit activities. The organization characterized the missions as a means to showcase internal technologies, enhance satellite engineering skills, and establish a foundation for upcoming commercial uses.

The missions aim to aid in-orbit technology evaluation, satellite capability advancement, global cooperation, and prospective commercial uses, the company states.

VinSpace was founded last November with a starting capital of 300 billion Vietnamese dong (equivalent to $11.4 million). Pham Nhat Vuong, the founder of Vingroup and Vietnam's wealthiest individual, possesses a majority share in the enterprise.

The launch agreement corresponds with a schedule VinSpace presented in April, stating its intention to create and deploy its initial satellites by 2027. The swift transition from formation to launch agreement highlights Vingroup's bold expansion into new technology areas beyond its foundational operations in real estate, retail, and automotive production.

Vietnam has been consistently broadening its aspirations in space. The nation set up its national space center in 2011 and has earlier launched smaller satellites for telecommunications and earth observation. VinSpace's participation, supported by a major private conglomerate in Southeast Asia, marks a new era of private sector engagement in a field historically dominated by the government.

For SpaceX, the contract brings in an additional client to its leading Transporter rideshare initiative, which has transformed the small-satellite launch industry by providing consistent, affordable access to space. The program has drawn clients from startups to governmental organizations globally, solidifying SpaceX's status as the top provider of rideshare launch services.
