Suphajee Suthumpu, the Minister of Commerce, provided an update on the status of tax discussions with the US. She noted that Thailand is currently making steady advancements in its negotiations with the US to reach mutually beneficial resolutions on various matters.

There remain numerous matters in which both parties possess distinct needs and expectations. Certain matters necessitate approval at the policy-level.

High-level discussions took place between the directors-general. The US conveyed its felicitations to Thailand for the successful conduct of the election and anticipates the timely completion of the new government formation process.

Both parties engaged in a detailed conversation regarding the schedule of the negotiations and the preparation of the agreement, both of which are closely linked to the progress of government formation. They anticipate that the discussions will come to a mutual resolution in the near future. They also deliberated on the schedule of the discussions and the creation of the agreement, a matter intricately tied to the progress of government formation.

The US does not have any opposition if Thailand presents a suggested list of items to be excluded from the RT tariff as outlined in Annex 3, or alternative proposals, prior to the end of the discussions.

The determination of the outcome will largely hinge on the results of the negotiations. In terms of benefits and drawbacks, Thailand holds a comparable position to other ASEAN nations when assessing the status of the RT tariff.

In the context of tax exemptions outlined in Annex 3 with the US, distinct terms have been established, contingent upon the ongoing negotiations. In general, the benefits will not be implemented right away.

In Malaysia, the benefits provided by the agreement will become operative after a period of 60 days following its implementation, in accordance with the country's internal legislation, upon the sending of a formal notification to the US. At this juncture, it signifies that the exported products listed in Annex 3 will continue to be subject to the standard RT tariff.

Moreover, it is anticipated that Suphajee Suthumpun will be appointed as the Minister of Commerce for a consecutive term in the upcoming administration led by the Bhumjaithai Party. Should she resume her position, it will mark a significant milestone in the history of the ministry, as it has been over a century since a former minister has been reinstated to the same role.

The private sector, particularly those involved in exporting, has demonstrated significant backing for Suphajee's return citing her proven track record during her previous tenure. Her comeback is viewed as a chance to further advance economic strategies and enhance commercial activities.

Unofficial election results indicate that the Bhumjaithai Party, led by Anutin Charnvirakul, has achieved close to 200 seats, positioning it as the predominant party in shaping the upcoming government. There is considerable expectation that the forthcoming administration will drive progress in Thailand, notably in the realm of economic revitalization, given the characterization of the nation as the "ailing man" of Asia by global media outlets.
