President Luong Cuong conducted a formal reception ceremony for Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, who was in Vietnam for the ceremonial signing of the UN Convention against Cybercrime taking place from October 24-25. After the reception, both parties engaged in bilateral discussions.

Secretary-General Guterres's visit aligns with two significant anniversaries: the UN's 80th anniversary since its establishment on October 24, 1945, and Vietnam's 80th National Day marking September 2, 1945.

Throughout these eight decades, the United Nations has demonstrated its essential position as the primary multilateral institution for international governance.

The organization has consistently worked to preserve peace, avert conflicts and warfare, and maintain the fundamental principles of international relations established in the UN Charter. Under UN guidance, numerous multilateral agreements spanning various sectors have been established, creating a unified structure for maintaining worldwide peace and security while advancing social and economic progress.

For almost five decades as an official United Nations member, Vietnam's relationship with the UN has become progressively more meaningful and wide-ranging. The United Nations has supported Vietnam throughout its journey from post-conflict rebuilding and rehabilitation to its step-by-step incorporation into the global community. As an engaged and accountable member, Vietnam has provided significant and tangible contributions across all major areas of UN operations, including peacekeeping missions, security matters, and development partnerships.

Vietnam has achieved the distinction of being selected twice as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council during the 2008-2009 and 2020-2021 periods, throughout which it presented various proposals and approaches to address worldwide challenges.

The nation currently occupies several significant roles on the international stage and persistently pursues participation in key multilateral frameworks and institutions.

The nation has also taken an active role in UN peacekeeping missions, sending approximately 1,100 military personnel and officers between 2014 and 2024 to operations in distant areas. Due to their commitment and meaningful interaction with local populations, Vietnam's peacekeeping forces have earned recognition as genuine "ambassadors of peace," contributing to the enhancement of the country's reputation and position globally.

This visit occurs during a period of rapid transformation and uncertainty in the world, characterized by interconnected difficulties including environmental changes, natural catastrophes, energy and food shortages, and health crises, all requiring enhanced international collaboration and unified responses.
