Vietnam's Trade Turnover Hits Record of Over $770 Billion

During the first eight months of 2026, Vietnam's overall import-export turnover hit 770.14 billion USD, marking the highest level for this period, an increase of 28.7 percent compared to the same time last year, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Finance.
In that timeframe, the nation's exports grew by 22.4 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 374.84 billion USD, while imports surged 35.3 percent to 395.3 billion USD, leading to a trade deficit of 20.46 billion USD.

In August, Vietnam's overall trade volume reached 109.7 billion USD, a decrease of 0.1 percent compared to the prior month but an increase of 31.7 percent year-over-year.
Exports totaled 54.79 billion USD, increasing by 3.2 percent from the previous month. The domestic economic sector generated 10.5 billion USD, rising by 2.2 percent, whereas the foreign-invested sector, encompassing crude oil, reached 44.29 billion USD, increasing by 3.4 percent.
In comparison to August 2025, exports grew by 26 percent, with the domestic sector up 14.1 percent and the foreign-invested sector increasing by 29.2 percent.
During the initial eight months, export revenue totaled 374.84 billion USD, representing a 22.4 percent increase compared to the previous year. The domestic sector represented 74.47 billion USD, a rise of 7.4 percent, making up 19.9 percent of total exports, while the foreign-invested sector made a contribution of 300.37 billion USD, an increase of 26.9 percent, representing 80.1 percent.
A total of 33 exported products generated revenue exceeding 1 billion USD each, collectively representing 93.6 percent of overall exports. Seven products generated export revenues over 10 billion USD each, accounting for 70 percent of the total.

Exports of manufactured industrial goods led the figures at 337.99 billion USD, accounting for 90.2 percent of the total, while agricultural and forestry products reached 26.65 billion USD (7.1 percent), seafood amounted to 8 billion USD (2.1 percent), and fuels and minerals contributed 2.2 billion USD (0.6 percent).
Imports for August were valued at 54.91 billion USD, a decrease of 3.1 percent from the prior month but an increase of 37.9 percent compared to the same time last year. The domestic sector reported 12.82 billion USD, a decrease of 7.1 percent, while the foreign-invested sector achieved 42.09 billion USD, a decline of 1.8 percent.
During the January to August timeframe, Vietnam's imports reached 395.3 billion USD, marking a 35.3 percent increase compared to the previous year. The domestic sector represented 105.07 billion USD, an increase of 23.7 percent, while the foreign-invested sector totaled 290.23 billion USD, rising by 40.1 percent.

A total of 43 imported items exceeded 1 billion USD in value, representing 93.9 percent of the overall import turnover. Three items surpassed 10 billion USD, accounting for 55.5 percent.
Production inputs represented 372.04 billion USD, or 94.1 percent, of the total imports.
Machinery, equipment, tools, and spare components accounted for 57.6 percent, whereas raw materials, fuels, and various inputs constituted 36.5 percent. Consumer products represented 23.26 billion USD, which is 5.9 percent. The US continued to be Vietnam's biggest export market, with revenue hitting 122 billion USD in the initial eight months, while China emerged as the largest import market with a combined turnover of 161.9 billion USD.
