Before the visit, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese conveyed his anticipation of greeting the leader of the Vietnamese Party and State, aiming to discuss methods to enhance bilateral collaboration. He highlighted that the partnership is strongly based on profound strategic trust, mutual interests, and collective ambitions for the region's future.

The two nations also have robust connections between their populations, with approximately 350,000 individuals of Vietnamese heritage residing in Australia.

Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Gillian Bird stated that the timing of the visit signifies the increasing ambition and progress in bilateral relations. She observed that collaboration within the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has broadened in areas such as trade and investment, defence and security, education, digital transformation, and energy transition, with the visit anticipated to convert commitments into tangible outcomes and enhance mutual prosperity.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam acknowledged that the visit marks a significant milestone heralding a new phase in bilateral relations, showcasing the strategic vision and commitment of both countries’ leaders to strengthen ties rooted in trust, mutual respect, and mutual benefit. It also signifies a crucial step in executing the foreign policy outlined at the 14th National Party Congress, facilitating the realization of the policy aimed at deepening relations with comprehensive strategic partners in a meaningful, effective, and sustainable manner.

The collaboration has already produced significant outcomes. Over two years after the two nations enhanced their relationship in March 2024, all six components of the 2024-2027 Action Program have been executed as planned, with 96 percent of the 180 action lines accomplished.

Economic collaboration continues to be a fundamental element. Australia ranks as the seventh-largest trading partner of Vietnam, while Vietnam is becoming a more vibrant economic ally for Australia in Southeast Asia. In the first half of 2026, bilateral trade hit 8.1 billion USD, marking a nearly 22 percent increase compared to the previous year, while Viet Nam's exports to Australia climbed over 25 percent to reach 3.8 billion USD

The importance of the journey goes beyond the relationship between the two countries. Vietnam and Australia are strongly dedicated to the centrality of ASEAN, multilateralism, and an international system grounded in the UN Charter and international law. Their collaboration at multilateral platforms, such as the United Nations, ASEAN, and Mekong subregional frameworks, will be especially crucial as Vietnam gears up to host APEC 2027.
