Joseph Lumban Gaol
President Director
Digitalization is no longer a choice, it is a necessity. Businesses that resist digital transformation risk becoming obsolete, while those that embrace it face growing cybersecurity challenges. The key lies in striking the right balance between growth and security, requiring strategic investment, continuous planning, and dedicated budgeting to safeguard operations and ensure long-term resilience.
Yet, Joseph Lumban Gaol, President Director at ITSEC Asia poses a critical question: Will businesses prioritize cybersecurity and stay ahead, or will they allow hackers to outpace them?
Joseph is a business transformation leader and venture builder who strongly advocates for proactive cybersecurity adoption. He emphasizes that cybersecurity must be a core business priority, not an afterthought, urging organizations to strengthen their defences before threats escalate.
With over two decades in the digital domain, Joseph is recognized as a thought leader in Indonesia’s digital industry, driving key innovations since 2000. At ITSEC Asia, he spearheads efforts to fortify businesses against rising cyber threats, ensuring cybersecurity is embedded into core business strategies.
Below is an exclusive conversation with Joseph Lumban Gaol, where he shares his journey, industry insights, and his vision for driving digital transformation and cybersecurity resilience.
How has your career evolved, and what key decisions shaped your journey?
I have been in the tech industry since the beginning of my career, transitioning from technical roles to management, product leadership, and executive positions. My career began as a management trainee at General Electric (GE) in 1994, where I gained a strong foundation through training, growth opportunities, and a meritocratic environment that shaped my professional development. I then moved to the telecommunications sector, joining XL Axiata as a Senior Product Manager, which deepened my focus on the IT and digital domain.
In 2000, I shifted to entrepreneurship, launching Indonesia’s first mobile banking service. Over the next 16 years, I built multiple digital startups across advertising technology, digital content, and digital rights management.
In 2016, I joined XL Axiata to build Axiata Digital Services, leading the development of digital businesses within Axiata’s ecosystem until 2021. By 2022, I returned to my entrepreneurial roots, identifying new opportunities in digital platforms. I became an advisor and board member for several companies, including ITSEC Asia. In 2023, ITSEC Asia went public in Indonesia, and I was appointed CEO to drive its next growth phase, focusing on management discipline and cybersecurity expansion.
This journey has given me a well-rounded perspective on digital transformation, product innovation, and business strategy in an evolving tech landscape.
What key obstacles did ITSEC Asia overcome become a cybersecurity leader in Indonesia?
Challenges and opportunities go hand in hand in cybersecurity. As digital transformation accelerates, nearly every aspect of the economy operates online, offering convenience but also exposing systems to cyber threats.
A major challenge has been cybersecurity awareness and adoption. While some organizations acknowledge the risks and take proactive measures, many hesitate due to the complexity and costs involved. Moving from awareness to full adoption is the need of the hour, as cybersecurity is no longer optional but essential.
Another key challenge is the talent gap. Until recently, cybersecurity was not a widely pursued career, and only in the last five to ten years has it gained mainstream attention, leading to a shortage of skilled professionals.
At ITSEC Asia, we focus exclusively on cybersecurity, prioritizing system integrity, investing in talent development, and driving industry-wide education. While these challenges persist, our expertise and proactive approach ensure we remain at the forefront of the industry.
What key leadership qualities have you learned in your career?
Integrity is essential for leadership. It starts with honesty, not just with others but with yourself. A strong leader acknowledges their vulnerabilities and embraces humility, recognizing that they don’t have all the answers but are willing to learn. Accepting challenges, understanding competitors' strengths, and adapting to grow are key to thriving, not just surviving.
Leadership also requires decisiveness. In a rapidly changing world driven by technological disruptions, leaders must take risks and make decisions without fear of failure. What matters is the ability to acknowledge mistakes, correct them, and minimize risks.
Equally important is being a storyteller. Today’s workforce, especially Gen Z and millennials, is motivated by purpose. Leaders must communicate effectively, inspire, and align their teams with a meaningful vision. Instead of focusing on generational differences, successful leaders identify and nurture strengths.
Finally, goal orientation is critical. Setting clear targets, measuring progress, and being honest about where you stand helps drive success.
How do you anticipate new market opportunities?
Every market has unique requirements, and a onesize- fits-all strategy doesn’t work. While expanding, businesses must understand cultural nuances, regulatory landscapes, and specific market needs. Adaptation is key, but full customization isn’t always feasible, so finding the right balance between global standardization and local customization is necessary. Success lies not just in chasing opportunities but in carefully assessing their long-term viability.
What core values and strategies drive ITSEC Asia’s success in cybersecurity?
Our core values begin with integrity, which is fundamental in cybersecurity consulting, as our people are our greatest asset. Competency is equally important, and we ensure continuous learning to keep our team at the forefront of the industry. Humility is another key value, no matter how advanced one’s expertise, there’s always more to learn.
We take pride in our work and uphold the highest quality standards. We are not swayed by short-term revenue opportunities that could compromise our credibility or reputation. Every decision we make aligns with our commitment to excellence and trust.
What is the future of cybersecurity in Indonesia, and ITSEC Asia’s role in it?
Indonesia has made significant progress in cybersecurity awareness, with the government taking a leadership role over the past five years. It is now a national agenda rather than just a private sector concern. Given global geopolitical challenges, cybersecurity is becoming a strategic industry, with growing demand and a stronger emphasis on talent development. As regulations increasingly mandate cybersecurity measures, businesses must integrate it into their budgets to protect consumers, companies, and national interests.
