Bank Indonesia Launches QRIS Cross-Border Payments With China

Bank Indonesia (BI) initiated the preliminary launch of the cross-border payment service utilizing the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) between Indonesia and China.
Through this collaborative effort, Indonesian citizens residing in China will have the capability to conduct payment transactions using QRIS, and this interoperability also extends to Chinese individuals in Indonesia.

“This important achievement reflects the strong and continuously growing collaboration between Bank Indonesia and the central bank of China, as well as close partnerships with industry stakeholders from both countries,” BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta said in a video message at the launch event in Beijing.
She stated that throughout the sandbox trial conducted in collaboration with the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) since August 17, 2025, QRIS users have registered 1.64 million incoming transactions, amounting to Rp556 billion or approximately $32.1 million.
Inbound transactions pertain to payments initiated by Chinese individuals within Indonesia, whereas outbound transactions involve Indonesians conducting transactions in China.
Presently, QRIS transactions within China are restricted to Alipay; however, WeChat Pay and UnionPay are also extensively utilized across the country.

Inbound transactions indicate robust demand, yet engagement remains primarily among early adopters. The outbound transactions numbered approximately 8,000, amounting to a value of about Rp6.4 billion.
“We anticipate that these figures will continue to rise following today's soft launch," stated Hendarta.
The cross-border QRIS framework facilitates swift, seamless, cost-effective, secure, and dependable transactions, while simultaneously fostering tourism, enhancing the engagement of small businesses, and bolstering interpersonal connectivity.
Bank Indonesia reiterated its dedication to encouraging the use of local currency via the Local Currency Transaction Framework, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and bolster financial resilience.

Previously, this system had been deployed in Thailand starting in August 2022, followed by its introduction in Malaysia in May 2023, in Singapore in November 2023, and subsequently in Japan beginning in August 2025.
