
FM Cho Urges Foundation Expansion in Talks With Iran FM

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met with his Iranian counterpart in New York to explore ways to strengthen collaboration across multiple areas, including cultural initiatives and interpersonal connections, according to an announcement from the foreign ministry.
The discussion between Cho and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi occurred the day before during the United Nations General Assembly sessions.
Both foreign ministers committed to enhancing their nations' relationship, drawing upon over six decades of partnership between South Korea and Iran.

Cho specifically emphasized the need to broaden opportunities for future collaboration by developing cooperation in accessible areas such as educational institutions, cultural programs, and citizen exchanges. He pointed to Korean cultural products and food, which have been increasingly popular in Iran, as promising areas for partnership.
The ministers also addressed matters related to the restoration of United Nations sanctions against Iran, according to reports.

The United States Security Council decided earlier this month to restore economic penalties against Iran due to violations of a 2015 agreement aimed at limiting its nuclear weapons program. South Korea chose not to vote, considering its diplomatic relationship with Tehran.
Cho emphasized the need for peaceful and diplomatic resolution through conversation and negotiation, expressing optimism that involved nations could continue pursuing a resolution.
On the same day, Cho conducted discussions with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, covering bilateral connections and regional safety matters.
Cho expressed optimism about advancing collaboration in military affairs, defense production, and additional sectors, while Wong characterized South Korea as among Australia's most significant allies, advocating for enhanced cooperation and strategic dialogue on global security issues, the ministry stated.

The representatives also shared perspectives on regional safety concerns and committed to strengthening collaborative efforts for regional peace and stability.
