LS Electric has entered into a partnership with global power infrastructure firm GE Vernova to create a joint venture centered on voltage-source converter high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) technology, aiming to enhance their competitive edge in Korea’s future power grid sector.
The strategic cooperation agreement was signed by the two companies at CIGRE 2026, a significant global event for power grid technology, in Paris.

LS Electric's Chairman Koo Ja-kyun and CEO Chae Dae-seok were present at the event with Philippe Piron, the CEO of GE Vernova’s Electrification division, and Johan Bindele, the CEO of its Grid Systems Integration sector.
The partnership, designated as Grid X Technology, will merge GE Vernova’s VSC-HVDC technology with LS Electric’s regional manufacturing and project implementation strengths. The firms will work together on essential equipment provision and the collaborative implementation of HVDC projects in Korea, while looking for chances to grow in international markets.
The collaboration aims to aid Korea in upgrading its power grid and enhancing the reliability of key transmission projects, including the government’s West Coast Energy Highway plan, which intends to deliver substantial renewable electricity produced in the southwestern Jeolla region and along the west coast to the Seoul metropolitan area.
“This cooperation brings together world-class VSC-HVDC technology and LS Electric’s unique experience in executing HVDC projects in Korea,” Koo says.

“Based on this partnership, we will strengthen Korea’s competitiveness to lead global HVDC technology and business”. Piron said, “By combining GE Vernova’s global HVDC technology and experience with LS Electric’s strong local manufacturing and execution capabilities, we can support Korea in building the reliable transmission infrastructure needed for its future energy and economic growth.”
According to the company, LS Electric is the sole Korean manufacturer with experience in providing essential equipment for commercial HVDC projects.
It provided essential equipment for the Bukdangjin-Godeok HVDC project, Korea's inaugural HVDC initiative, and is also delivering significant equipment for the East Coast-Seoul Metropolitan Area HVDC project.
LS Electric runs the largest HVDC production facility in Korea at its Busan plant, featuring integrated systems for the design, production, and testing of essential equipment such as converter transformers. The company stated that its experience in projects and production abilities will guarantee a consistent supply and quick reactions to shifts in global supply chains.
“VSC-HVDC requires not only advanced technology but also proven project execution experience and stable supply capabilities,” an LS Electric official says.

“This joint venture will integrate GE Vernova’s global-leading technology with LS Electric’s domestic project execution and production capabilities, providing customers with a streamlined interface for major projects such as the West Coast Energy Highway while strengthening the competitiveness of Korea’s HVDC industry.”
