OpenAI to Expand Advertising Pilot to Korea and Other Nations
OpenAI is poised to broaden its fledgling advertising initiative across five additional markets, among which are Korea, the UK, and Japan, as the leading figure in artificial intelligence aims to generate revenue from its extensive base of free users.
The company declared its intention to initiate trials of sponsored content in Brazil and Mexico in the forthcoming weeks.
This initiative represents the inaugural substantial international expansion of a pilot program that has thus far been confined to the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The enlargement targets adult users particularly on the platform's "Free" and "Go" subscription levels.
Although OpenAI gained prominence by offering an ad-free, utility-oriented interface, this transition highlights the increasing pressure on AI developers to counterbalance the enormous computational expenses necessary to sustain their models. To address privacy concerns, OpenAI has stated that advertisements will be distinctly marked and segregated from the core technology.
The company has assured that promotional materials will not affect the chatbot's replies, and advertisers will be prohibited from obtaining access to individual user transcripts. Rather, companies will be provided with only anonymized, aggregated data, such as overall impressions and click-through rates.

"As businesses show strong interest in connecting with users in dialogue-driven and purpose-led environments, we are expanding the regions where we are testing ChatGPT ads," says Dave Dugan, OpenAI’s vice president of global ad solutions. "We will continue to prioritize user experience and trust, and will operate the ad experience carefully in each region."
The organization is instituting multiple protective measures. Advertisements will be restricted from appearing in discussions that involve sensitive or potentially regulated subjects, and they will additionally be withheld from accounts recognized as minors.
Moreover, the company’s premium services — which encompass the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu levels — will continue to operate without any advertisements.
Before the advertisements are launched, users in newly targeted markets will receive in-product notifications, thereby enabling them to conceal particular promotions or modify their personalization preferences.

This development occurs as the artificial intelligence industry shifts toward adopting a "freemium" model, a concept well-established among major social media companies.
By incorporating advertisements, OpenAI is wagering that it can evolve ChatGPT from merely a productivity tool into a profitable advertising platform, while still retaining the vast number of users who have incorporated the software into their everyday routines.
