Prabowo, Putin Explore Visa-Free Travel to Boost Ties

President Prabowo Subianto and Russian leader Vladimir Putin are in discussions regarding a reciprocal agreement on visa-free travel in order to enhance connectivity and strengthen ties, as stated by Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

The two leaders engaged in bilateral discussions at the Kremlin in Moscow, December 10th, focusing on collaboration in various fields such as energy, industry, agriculture, research, science, and technology exchange.

“President Putin also raised humanitarian and tourism cooperation, supported by direct flights and a possible visa-free policy,” Teddy said in Jakarta.

Putin emphasized the possibility of collaboration between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union.

“He praised Indonesia’s full BRICS membership and raised the prospect of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the EAEU,” Teddy adds.

After concluding an official trip to Islamabad, Pakistan, Prabowo traveled to Moscow. Following this, the two leaders convened for a three-hour meeting within the confines of the Kremlin.

During the discussions, Putin expressed Russia's backing for Indonesia's initiative to construct nuclear power facilities and promised to provide aid for the country's overall industrial advancement.

He emphasized that Russia perceives a myriad of prospects for collaborative ventures with Indonesia, especially within the realms of manufacturing and agriculture.

Putin expressed his sympathies for the devastation caused by the flash floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra on November 25, resulting in the tragic loss of almost 1,000 lives and numerous individuals still unaccounted for.

Prabowo invited Putin to visit Indonesia, and the Russian leader accepted. “Thank you. I will certainly come, with great pleasure,” Putin says.

Prabowo was accompanied to the Kremlin by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, while Putin was accompanied by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and other high-ranking Russian officials.

After concluding his trip to Moscow, Prabowo is scheduled to make his way back to Indonesia, as Teddy conveyed. Reportedly, the president is anticipated to travel directly to Sumatra in order to assess the disaster response operations and chair a coordination meeting with ministers and heads of agencies, as per information shared with journalists.
