Today, Japan granted $10 Billion to Southeast Asian nations in terms of financial aid to support the economies facing crisis due to conflicts in the Middle East disrupting Japan's access to key oil-based medical supplies.
As a manifestation of this commitment, the Japanese Government will contribute 1.6 trillion Yen ($10 Billion) via an effort called Power Asia intended to assist Southeast Asian nations in developing new supply chains and complementing their ability to acquire oil and petroleum products.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made the announcement during an online APEC summit with selected ASEAN members/partners within the scope of AZEC plus.
Sanae Takaichi said “We rely on supplies from Asian countries for medical items such as equipment used for dialysis patients, as well as waste fluid containers and gloves required for surgical procedures,”
“Together with the nations of Asia, we will work to build a resilient energy, critical mineral and supply chain framework, so that all of Asia can become stronger and more prosperous.” she added.
She denied the new partnership would have any adverse effect on Japan’s domestic supply of oil.

Concerns about the announcement of instability in the Middle East on global energy markets has increased as oil-dependent economies throughout Asia have been greatly impacted by these effects.

By taking a proactive approach to extending financial assistance, Japan is establishing itself as a major stabilizing presence in the region and helping to offset supply shocks and dramatic price fluctuations faced by countries in Southeast Asia.

Japan is also implementing a broader strategy of protecting our vital, key industries where the dependence on oil-derived products is particularly strong.
