Influential CEOs from the Indian Sub-Continent - 2026
South Asia continues to rank among the world’s fastest-growing regions, although its pace of expansion is expected to slow. The Asian Development Bank forecasts growth to ease from 6.8% in 2025 to 6.3% in 2026, before picking up again to 6.8% in 2027. Much of this growth, however, is driven by India.
Without India, the rest of the region is expected to expand by only around 4.1%, highlighting the country’s outsized role in the regional economy. India is projected to grow by 6.9% in FY2026, helped by resilient domestic demand and improving access to financing.
Across the rest of South Asia, economic performance varies considerably. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan are seeing renewed investor confidence as improvements in governance and reform-focused policies support their recoveries from earlier economic difficulties. Nepal, on the other hand, shows how quickly political uncertainty can undermine economic progress.
The broader lesson is clear: strong institutions and effective leadership are just as important as favorable economic conditions. With risks such as higher energy costs, inflation, and weaker remittances from the Gulf increasing, good governance could ultimately determine which countries turn growth opportunities into sustainable, long-term development.
